Nutritional advice for triathletes
Nutrition advice for triathletes: here's how to get the most out of your race with BYE Nutrition
A triathlon is not just a race - it is a huge challenge where you put your body to the test in three different sports: swimming, cycling and running. Whether you're doing your first sprint triathlon or preparing for an Ironman, proper nutrition is a gamechanger. The right nutrition plan can help you keep your energy up, recover faster and improve your performance.
What does a triathlete need?
Triathletes need a different nutrition strategy than, say, runners or cyclists, simply because you are doing three sports in a row. Finding the right balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats is key to keeping your body fueled during the race.
Carbohydrates: your fuel
Whether you're doing a sprint or a full Ironman, carbohydrates are your best friend. They give you the energy you need to get through the entire course. Think pasta, rice, or sports nutrition to keep your energy levels steady.
Protein: recovery is essential
After all that swimming, biking and running, your muscles need a major overhaul. Proteins help your muscles recover and become stronger. A good protein shake or protein-rich snack after training is therefore essential.
Hydration: keep drinking
During a triathlon, you lose a lot of fluids, especially if you race in hot conditions. It is important to stay well hydrated both before and during the race. Isotonic sports drinks help you replenish not only fluids, but also important minerals.
Nutritional advice Sprint triathlon (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run)
Nutrition advice Olympic triathlon or quarter triathlon (1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run)
Two hours before the start drink 750 ml of Endurance Booster and eat an Endurance Bar. After the swim, take an Endurance Bar or Pro Fruit Gel. During cycling, drink 500-750 ml of Endurance Booster every hour and take a gel or bar every 40 minutes. During running you take a Pro Fruit Gel every 30 minutes. Test this schedule during your training so that you are well prepared at the start.
Our (sports) nutrition advice for a Half Ironman (triathlon) (1.9 km swim, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run)
Halfway through you take a magnesium shot. During running, take a Pro Fruit Gel every 30 minutes and an Energy Shot 1.5 hours before the finish line. Test this schedule during your workouts so that you will be right at the start line
Our (sports) nutrition advice for Ironman (full triathlon) (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run)
Halfway through you take a magnesium shot. During running, take a Pro Fruit Gel every 20 minutes or a 40 Carbs Fruit Gel every 30 minutes, and an Energy Shot 1.5 hours before the finish line. Test this schedule during your workouts so that you're right at the start line
Recovery after your triathlon
After a triathlon, your body is in need of recovery. Be sure to take a recovery shake within 45 minutes so your muscles can recover quickly and your energy is replenished. Also keep drinking well after the race to replenish your fluid balance, and eat a good meal with carbohydrates and protein within a few hours.
At BYE Nutrition, we help triathletes get the best out of themselves. Whether you're in your first triathlon or looking to take the next step to a longer distance, we offer the right products to support your performance. Our blogs are full of helpful tips on nutrition and recovery, so you're always optimally prepared at the start line.
